Sleep Supplement Product Efficacy Testing Service Information

Sleep and relaxation are crucial factors that affect consumers’ quality of life and health. Ensuring the effectiveness and safety of dietary supplements is a top priority for brand owners and manufacturers, as these products can directly impact consumers’ health and well-being.

Currently, there are numerous sleep supplements and sleep relaxation supplements available in the market. Testing and analyzing these products are essential steps in ensuring their quality and safety. Standardized testing helps ensure that the products contain the appropriate ingredients and can deliver the advertised effects, enhancing their credibility and consumer confidence.

Our offered sleep supplement testing services cover a wide range, from testing the quantity of active ingredients like melatonin and serotonin to assessing their effectiveness in stimulating melatonin (at the cellular level), along with cell-level toxicity testing to ensure maximum safety and efficacy of your products.

Testing the effectiveness of these supplements enables brand owners and manufacturers to confidently meet consumer needs and differentiate themselves in a highly competitive market.

Sleep and Relaxation Problems

Insufficient sleep and stress are prevalent health issues in today’s society, affecting a large population worldwide. These problems can arise from various causes, both internal and external to individuals. Internal factors may include work-related stress, anxiety, or depression, while external factors may involve an unbalanced lifestyle, caffeine or alcohol consumption before bed, or an environment not conducive to sleep, such as bright lights or noise disturbances.

Insufficient or poor-quality sleep can have a wide range of impacts on physical and mental health. Studies have shown that insufficient sleep is a risk factor for various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and depression. Moreover, inadequate sleep negatively affects brain function, leading to problems with memory, concentration, and decision-making, ultimately impacting work performance and overall quality of life.

To address sleep problems and stress, experts recommend lifestyle modifications such as maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, avoiding stimulants before bed, creating a relaxing bedroom environment, and regular exercise. In some cases, consulting a doctor or sleep specialist may be necessary to identify the root cause of the problem and receive appropriate treatment, which may include sleep medications.

The Importance of Dietary Supplement Testing

Testing sleep aid and relaxation supplements is crucial because these products must be safe and effective. Testing allows manufacturers and brand owners to ensure their products meet standards and can genuinely meet consumer needs. Additionally, testing helps prevent false advertising claims, which could mislead consumers and lead them to choose unsuitable products.

Standardized testing of dietary supplements confirms that the product contains the appropriate amount of active ingredients and can deliver the advertised effects. Testing also helps reduce the risk of consuming substances that may cause side effects or harm health.

Mechanisms of Action of Sleep and Relaxation Supplements

Sleep and relaxation supplements often contain various active ingredients that affect the nervous system. These substances play a crucial role in promoting quality sleep and better relaxation, including melatonin and serotonin.

  • Melatonin: A hormone produced by the pineal gland in the brain, melatonin plays a vital role in regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin production increases in darkness, making us feel sleepy and ready for sleep.
  • Serotonin: A neurotransmitter involved in mood regulation and relaxation, serotonin helps reduce stress and promotes calmness. Additionally, serotonin is a precursor to melatonin production in the body.

However, in Thailand, the Food and Drug Administration has issued a notification prohibiting the use of melatonin as an ingredient in dietary supplements due to its hormonal nature, as long-term use may be harmful. Currently, melatonin is classified as a special controlled drug and should only be used under medical supervision. Therefore, manufacturers or brand owners need to carefully select extracts or herbs that can act similarly to melatonin.

To meet the needs of manufacturers, brand owners, and researchers aiming to develop products with sleep and relaxation properties, VISBIO Co., Ltd. offers a package of product tests for sleep and relaxation supplements.

Melatonin Quantification Test

Melatonin is a crucial substance in regulating the sleep-wake cycle. Melatonin quantification in dietary supplements is done using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), a highly accurate technique that can detect melatonin at low levels.

Melatonin Stimulation Efficacy Test

The melatonin stimulation efficacy test in neuronal cells is a cell-level test using 2D Cell Culture in conjunction with an enzymatic assay. Our experts will culture HEK293T cells in a T-75 flask within a cell culture incubator at 37 degrees Celsius, 5% CO2, and 5% relative humidity. The cell culture medium is changed every 3 days. When the cells reach 80-90% confluency, they are transferred to a 96-well plate. Then, cAMP reagent is added and incubated at room temperature for 2 hours, followed by the addition of the test sample. After incubation at room temperature for 5-10 minutes, luminescence is measured to determine the amount of cAMP produced (%cAMP production).
