About Our Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) Activity Testing
VISBIO Co., Ltd. offers superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity testing for all types of products in the health and beauty, food and beverage, and pharmaceutical industries.
As consumers pay more attention to health and beauty, demand is rising for products made with natural ingredients that help slow aging and prevent disease. Superoxide dismutase (SOD), a potent antioxidant enzyme, is attracting attention in the dietary supplement and cosmetics industries. With its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and cell-protective properties, superoxide dismutase is a valuable ingredient that can add significant value to your products.
Superoxide dismutase
An antioxidant is a substance that can prevent or slow oxidation reactions. Normally, the body can produce enough antioxidants on its own, but abnormal conditions such as stress, repeatedly staying up late, taking medicines that lower antioxidant enzyme levels, or various diseases can increase free radical production until the balance between antioxidants and free radicals is lost, resulting in oxidative stress. Free radicals that are not eliminated damage cells and tissues and contribute to various diseases, such as blocked blood vessels, cancer and Parkinson’s disease, as well as a range of inflammatory conditions.
Superoxide dismutase is an effective antioxidant enzyme that counters the free radicals produced by metabolism and energy use within cells. The body has this enzyme from birth, but its levels tend to decline gradually with age. SOD acts as a first line of defense, removing the free radicals generated in the course of daily life before they can react, give rise to toxic products and damage the body’s cells.
Working together with catalase, SOD converts superoxide radicals into water and oxygen, which are harmless to the body. When the body cannot produce enough SOD, secondary free-radical defenses come into play: the body must rely on other antioxidants, known as secondary antioxidants, which come from the everyday diet. These antioxidants act only briefly and neutralize only some of the free radicals before being used up themselves, so they must be consumed in large amounts to have an effect. SOD is therefore an important antioxidant, and supplementation is often suggested to make up for the body’s declining SOD levels, since without enough of the enzyme the body cannot convert superoxide radicals into non-toxic substances.
Market Trends for SOD Products
The market for dietary supplements and cosmetics containing superoxide dismutase is growing rapidly worldwide. According to Verified Market Reports, the global superoxide dismutase market was valued at about USD 1.2 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 2.5 billion by 2034, driven by demand from the medical, cosmetics and dietary supplement sectors.
Product Development Approaches
Superoxide dismutase is often described as an antioxidant several times more potent than vitamin C and vitamin E. It neutralizes superoxide radicals, a major contributor to cell degeneration and to diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer’s disease. Adding superoxide dismutase to dietary supplements and cosmetics can therefore give products a distinctive health and beauty selling point.
Dietary supplements containing superoxide dismutase can be offered in capsule or powder form and positioned to support the immune system, healthy aging and overall health. In cosmetics, superoxide dismutase can be incorporated into creams, serums or masks to help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and dark spots and give the complexion a brighter look.
Superoxide Dismutase Activity Test Method
Superoxide dismutase is a key enzyme in the body’s mechanisms for controlling free radicals. We determine its activity with a Superoxide Dismutase Activity Assay Kit: absorbance is measured on a microplate reader, the IC50 is determined, and SOD activity is then calculated in AU/mg.
Equation: SOD activity = 1000/IC50 (µg)
*1 AU (unit) is defined as the amount of SOD that inhibits the reaction by 50% under the assay conditions described above.
