Driving Biochemistry Research and Analytical Testing to Elevate Thailand’s Health and Beauty Industry

A Scientific Partnership to Bring Research to the Health and Beauty Market
Today’s health and beauty industry is driven more by “scientific evidence” than by advertising, so the credibility of data has become a key factor in product development, regulatory compliance and competitiveness in both domestic and international markets. In this context, VISBIO Co., Ltd. (VISBIO) and the Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at Kasetsart University on 18 May 2023 to establish a systematic framework for working together and to take research forward into tangible, real-world use in the health and beauty industry.
A Collaboration Linking “Basic Science” with “Industrial Application”
The essence of this collaboration is to connect in-depth knowledge of biochemistry and molecular biology with analytical testing and industrial application. It aims to promote, support and jointly conduct research in the basic biochemistry of living organisms, including specialized areas such as protein-structure biochemistry, as well as analytical testing and other applications that add value to processed herbal raw materials, active ingredients and health and beauty products across many categories.
Main Objective: Advancing Knowledge and Analytical Testing to Meet Industry Needs
Under the MOU, the two organizations have agreed to jointly advance research and knowledge related to analytical testing and the use of its results in the health and beauty industry, in order to generate “scientific data that supports decision-making” at every level, from raw materials and active ingredients to finished products. This approach helps close the gap between academic knowledge and the needs of industry, which typically requires results that are clear, measurable and comparable, and that can be turned efficiently into a direction for product or service development.
The Department of Biochemistry’s Role: Supporting Research, Development and In-Depth Knowledge Transfer
On the academic side, the department (the Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University) plays a key role in supporting education, research and the development of the collaboration, and co-develops training courses for entrepreneurs to strengthen their scientific knowledge and understanding relevant to the health and beauty industry. It also places importance on exchanging and jointly developing industry knowledge by appointing expert speakers to give lectures and transfer knowledge to network companies and entrepreneurs, a mechanism that turns “in-depth knowledge” into “practical knowledge” for product development and higher standards.
VISBIO’s Role: Connecting Private-Sector Networks and Accelerating the Real-World Use of Results
VISBIO’s main role is to build connections with, and expand, private-sector networks in the health and beauty industry, and to co-develop training courses for entrepreneurs in the same industry so that knowledge transfer and application reach a wide audience. This division of roles means the collaboration does not stop at generating knowledge, but moves on to building a “network of real users” with real problems and real needs, which is essential if research and analytical testing are to be used to raise the quality of products, processes and industry standards as a whole.
Scope for Development: Adding Value to Processed Herbs, Active Ingredients and Health Products Across Categories
The MOU sets the direction for joint work to add value to processed herbal raw materials, active ingredients, cosmetics, dietary supplements and herbal products, as well as other services in the health and beauty industry. This reflects a systems view of the “value chain,” from raw materials and active ingredients through to end products, which allows a wide range of sub-projects to be defined, covering basic research, the development of analytical methods and industrial applications aligned with market needs and regulatory requirements.
5-Year Continuity: A Long-Term Collaboration Framework for Tangible Results
To ensure continuity, the MOU sets a collaboration period of 5 years, from January 2023 to January 2028. This clear timeframe allows both parties to design work plans and sub-projects with continuous goals, from defining research questions and conducting studies to applying the results systematically within entrepreneur networks and industry.
A Clear and Transparent Framework for Collaboration
The MOU sets out a clear framework for working together, covering intellectual property, the protection of confidential information, coordination and the public communication of results, so that the collaboration remains transparent, fair and beneficial to all parties.
Conclusion: A Shared Goal to Build a Practical Scientific Foundation for Thai Entrepreneurs
The Memorandum of Understanding between the Faculty of Science, Kasetsart University and VISBIO lays the foundation for a collaboration that combines an “in-depth scientific core” with a “mechanism for real-world use,” through clearly defined objectives, roles, responsibilities, timeframe and governance principles, including intellectual property and confidentiality. It supports knowledge development, analytical testing and applications that systematically add value to processed herbal raw materials, active ingredients and health and beauty products.
